Needle Felted Green Dragon by tallydragon Needle Felted Green Dragon by tallydragon
This is a very small needle felted dragon that I made for my mom, who wanted a dragon that could sit on the hand of a Super Dollfie. He also sits great on my fingers! More pictures of this guy to come as I take them.

Needle felting, for those unfamiliar with it, is a technique that uses special barbed needles to essentially create a 'wool sculpture'. It's the same way they make the felt you buy in stores, except that by only using one needle at a time and adding wool as you go, you can control the shape of the felt. I'm still a beginner, but I'm working at it!

He is made out of natural wools from the Iron Horse Farm, a local fiber farm, and the Flying Ewe, a fiber arts website. He has a wire understructure through most of his body that makes his wings, legs, and tail moderately poseable--the tail is extra long so that it can curl around the finger its sitting on. He's got glass eyes held in by glue and wires, and his horns are made out of wire covered in apoxie sculpt, topped with acrylic paint and matte varnish. The wing membranes are actually white store-bought felt, which I then added a thin layer of pale green wool to...I thought it would make it stronger that way.

The ungainly thing he is sitting upon is my knee. XD

Colored wools, glass eyes, wire, felt, apoxie sculpt, acrylic, varnish, and needle felting needles.

It's so hard for me as you say you're just a beginner at this one. I already felted 5 dragons and none of them looks so good as this one. But all of my dragons have non felted wings and now I'm trying for the first time to felt a dragon compledly when I saw this beauty little one

Your Dragons are super cute and well done, I love needle felting as well it is really therapeutic doing the repetitive stabbing motion of the needle, as long as you don't poke yourself. :)  Love love your felts!

Do you know if you can get wool from Hobbylobby to be used for needle felting??
sheenamontane Featured By Owner Apr 6, 2013  Professional General Artist
As a needle felter, I have to say this is such a great piece! I teach classes and I love how you've thought outside the realm of just using wool, but also implementing elements like wire covered apoxy. I tend to be a purist and only use wool, but I really appreciate what you've done!

Thank you! It's always great to speak with another felter. :) I really enjoy multimedia felting, but I actually need to remind myself now and then that I don't always *need* to use extras--the wool is enough. :) I suffer from a tendency to always want to make things more complicated. ^_^;;

Will you be selling these?
tallydragon Featured By Owner Mar 13, 2013   Artisan Crafter
Eventually I hope to, but I haven't had a chance to work on them in awhile. Once I manage to hammer down the technique and make them faster, I'll sell them. :)

Hi there, i love this little dragon! I have to create some textile projects for my diploma in art & design, would you say this is an easy area for someone that has never done any stitching or...well anything to do with textiles? or could you suggest some easy options? :) so far i got collage lol and thats it

Many thanks
tallydragon Featured By Owner Jan 11, 2013   Artisan Crafter
Thank you!

I've never done any stitching either, needle felting is definitely a completely unrelated technique--it's hard for me to say whether or not it's *easy*. It's a really weird medium but once you get a "feel" for it I don't think it's difficult, though it IS very slow. I think it depends a lot on what kind of art comes naturally to you! Like, I'm terrible at patterns. But besides felting, I sculpt a lot, and for me felting is more like sculpting than anything else--just sculpting with a needle. Other techniques like wet felting might be faster for a big project, but I haven't used them so I can't say too much about them.
