Here's some more shots of the black wyvern! Sorry it's so huge, I thought it'd be better to make one big collage than a bunch of little ones.
I tried to show a bunch of angles/poses, plus you can get a feel for his size better when compared to the green dragon (and various other critters). You can tell which pics I was just having fun with. XD (there's even a repeat of the infamous sitting-on-my-leg pose!).
Needle felting, to recap again, is a technique used to create what are essentially 'wool sculptures'. There's no sewing involved; instead, by punching the raw wool thousands of times with special barbed needles, you transform it into felt, and can control the shape of the felt.
This guy's insides are a coarse, rough wool from the Iron Horse Farm, which is covered on the outside with soft black wool from the Flying Ewe website. His wing membranes and underbelly are made out of coal colored storebought felt. He's got glass eyes and has horns and claws made out of wire and apoxie sculpt. I painted the horns/claws a mottled gray, then added pearlescent gloss, then added matte varnish...which, to my dismay, looks exactly like silver paint. D'oh.
He has a separate wire in each wingfinger, as well as wires in the arm bones, legs and tail, making him gently poseable. This is because he's a quadrupedal wyvern, not a biped; he stands propped up on his wingthumbs and first wingfinger (like in the upper right pic).
I am now taking a break from wings. *falls over exhausted*
Amazing work yet again. I still don't understand how you have the patience to pull this off, but you still do. I must say this cutie is impressive in both size and looks.
If you have a moment, may I ask how long one of these takes you, on average?
How cute! You do such wonderful work, I haven't seen anything like this. I love how versatile they are in posing and whatnot. Plus your photos are priceless, especially the one with the kitty. ^^
