Bulbasaur Sprout Seedling Planter

Description

These are bulbasaur seedling planters, cast from an original sculpture I made sometime last year. They were designed to hold a plastic k-cup in their back as a seedling pot. :) (k-cups are leftover from using a keurig coffee machine. I wanted a new way to recycle my k-cups!) The idea came from bulbasaur's pokedex entry, which says (paraphrased) that "a seed is planted on its back at birth and grows with it as it ages." So, these little guys are just babies! I call them Bulbasaur Sprouts. :)

The original sculpture was done in super sculpey, and the mold made of smooth-on silicone. Then I poured the casts using dyed alumilite resin. I hand-painted the faces and spots using acrylic and sealed them with a matte varnish coat. (Plus sanding and filling as-needed).

I still have a lot to learn about casting (micro-bubbles, how you plague me *shakes fist*), but I've managed to pour a good handful of them, which I'll be taking with me to Another Anime Con. I should take a picture of my bulbasaur army before they go. :)

EDIT: I may put a few of these online for sale if there are any left after the con. I'm planning to make more, but that will take longer; the mold took a beating and I think I'll have to redo it. I'm also just really nervous about selling stuff online...I want to wait and make sure people like them as much in person as they do in pictures first.

P.S. It turns out I'm not the only one to come up with pokemon planters. For a really epic ivysaur, check out Teggy's page!

Bulbasaur belongs to Nintendo and the creators of Pokemon. I'm just a fan.
